Alessio M., now Allievo Business Controller at La Rinascente di Milano

Alessio M., from the Specialized Master in Fashion Management, talks about her experience with RBS and how it has been a life changer for him, what he learned not only in competences but in skills that he is now applying in the daily work, thanks to the opportunity he got with the support of the Career Services.

Tell about yourself, what your path pre, during and post master’s that brought you to where you are today

After my bachelor’s degree, where I developed economic-financial notions, I was looking for a new stimulus that would allow me to apply the knowledge I acquired during my undergraduate years in a stimulating and long admired environment like fashion. Being able to be an active resource in terms of management of a fashion company whose values I daily espouse, or in general belonging to the environment, made me proud and proud just to think about it. Hence the idea of taking advantage of the great opportunity made available by the Rome Business School through the Master in Fashion Management, a chance that must be seized by anyone who wants to enter and establish himself in the world of work with a marked carat. The Master has given me so much, both in terms of notions but especially in terms of a methodological approach, united both by interpersonal relationships with colleagues from all over the world, and therefore with multiple histories and approaches to life different from each other, and by professors not only in terms of “teachers” but of prepared people who, through their own personal experience have been able, day after day, to transfer to all of us their numerous and marked experiences in their field of expertise. Today I hold, thanks to the daily dedication and excellent brokerage service of the Career Services Department, a much sought-after position as a Trainee Business Controller at La Rinascente in Milan. Being part of this work reality today makes me proud and always motivated to do better and, every day, I carry with me that mantra distinguished also during the master’s program, getting better and better to do better and better, consequently, also the people and the environment around me.

What are the most important skills you acquired at RBS, which ones you will have to work on the most and which ones to focus on that are crucial in the world of work today

In addition to the methodological approach I was talking about that allows you to have a different view of things, in a much more analytical way without, however, losing sight of the general view of things, I think I have developed notions, partly of economic carat, partly of carat related in my case to the world of fashion, always aimed at the managerial figure in training, but also skills strictly related to personal relationships to be managed in a working environment. I’m talking about the duality of circumstances involving team building, time management but even more understanding how to build something concrete from just an abstract idea. I think that was one of the strengths I focused on, being able to move from the abstract to the concrete by delimiting its uses and possibilities on various circumstances. Certainly it is never a point of arrival that of personal training, understood as the growth of one’s own internal resources, but the base dictated during the Master’s period turns out to be, for me today, solid for continuous growth and aspiring to new important goals.

Why did you decide to join RBS, what did the master’s program give you in terms of skills, competencies, meetings with companies and experiences?

As I anticipated earlier what pushed me to join RBS was curiosity and wanting to find a new stimulus in an environment that until before I only admired externally, such as the fashion world. At first I was skeptical, as happens on the first day of school, I did not know what to expect but I knew it was a chance to be taken at all costs. Today I can say that the vision from the beginning of the master’s program has been fully achieved and even far exceeded. If I look back the path was certainly challenging, but it was worth it to have both technical and personal background that I would not have had otherwise. The motto “Better managers for a better world” is true and is fueled by all the experiences that, at the end of the journey, point to how the goal is to improve their students and help them achieve their goals. An added value is definitely given by the service offered by the Career Services Department, the numerous meetings with national and international companies or even the workshop labs, immediately hint at the effectiveness of the business school’s communication channels, numerous companies are looking for talent for internal turnover, and the collaboration with RBS allows all students to find possibilities that fit their characteristics and needs perfectly.

What do you want to focus on in your work experience today, and what is your career goal?

The main thing I want to focus on today is listening. In a large work environment and in an established business like Rinascente, my current goal is to prioritize listening. To listen, not just to hear, but to actively participate aware of the fact that you can increasingly learn from those in front of you, such that you have awareness in being able to act, speak and operate to the best of your ability to help the company grow more and more every day. Certainly a medium- to long-term focus is on being a bulwark and point of reference also for future talents who will arrive over the years and grow together with the company in terms of personal responsibility, starting, however, always from a certainty: dedication, honesty and seriousness as addendums of an equation that results in satisfaction in everyday work.

Give 3 pieces of advice to your fellow students to get like you in a career opportunity

The three pieces of advice I want to give to those who will read these lines are mainly three:

  • Curiosity: always be curious to ask the why of things, do not be afraid to discover, because it is the only real way to learn and grow;
  • Risk: take the risk of walking a trend or pursuing an idea against everything and everyone; believe in what you do and take risks so that you have no regrets about not trying;
  • Dedication: remember that sacrifices are the basis for achieving any goal, it is good to be there and you should be willing to make them in order to truly appreciate the value of the goals once achieved.

Be curious, take risks and remember to do things by way, leaving nothing to chance, through sacrifice and dedication, then there will be satisfaction knowing that you have worked to the best of your ability and you will be proud to have achieved what you have fought so hard for.
