Plan ahead for your ideal career path

What job would you like to do? This is probably one of the questions that causes most anxiety throughout young adults, especially when coming to the end of university, or a Master course.
Many students tend to avoid this question, thinking that finding and answer is too cumbersome – and working life is light years away anyways. It’s always so tempting and easy to put thoughts about jobs and career to one side.

In fact, recent surveys show that current studies are more worried than excited about the idea of entering into the job market. It appears that 28% report feeling “anxious”, 16% are “uncertain” and another 16% “overwhelmed”.

The anxiety is usually caused by a great doubt in many students minds. When it comes to deciding what to do with their lives, they are unable to decide how exaclty they plan on earning a living.

Which industry? Which role?

Part of this indecision is of course due to lack of hands-on experience. If haven’t experienced a role or an industry in first person, how are you to know if it’s the right choice for you? For this and many more reasons, it’s never too soon to get started on your career.

The best course of action is to start considering internships as soon as possible. Michele Trusolino, CEO and founder of Debut Careers, claims that “The earlier you start, the better the end result will be. Students who get placements or internships in their first or second year are much more likely to get offered a role by employers come graduation.” In addition, starting early will also allow students to try different experiences, different industries and roles. This is the only way to truly understand what path fits you.
