The Origins of Bulgari: An Icon of Luxury and Creativity

On Wednesday, December 11th, students from the Rome Business School had the honor of attending an exclusive meeting with Bulgari Hotel.

During this company meeting, Carlo Bevilacqua, Hotel Manager, and Francesca Romana Fivoli, HR Manager, shared valuable insights into the world of luxury hospitality and the corporate values that drive the brand. The speakers explored how innovation, luxury, and hospitality intertwine in Bulgari’s philosophy, offering students a unique perspective on how the company continues to evolve while remaining true to its tradition of excellence.

Bulgari, one of the most prestigious jewelry houses in the world, was founded in Rome in 1884 by Sotirio Bulgari, a talented Greek silversmith from Ioannina. Since its inception, the brand has built a reputation for excellence, thanks to its craftsmanship and distinctive creations.

Bulgari’s first success came from its silver creations, which were appreciated by English tourists visiting Rome during the Grand Tour. The company quickly expanded, opening its first store on Via Sistina, followed by the historic boutique on Via Condotti, which became a landmark for visitors and jewelry collectors.

Bulgari Hospitality: Intimate and Personalized Luxury

Bulgari has embarked on an ambitious journey in the world of hospitality, aiming to convey authentic Italian hospitality through an exclusive selection of luxury hotels that embody the brand’s refinement and distinctive design. Among its most recent and significant projects, the Bulgari Hotel Roma stands as a tribute to the brand’s roots. Located in Piazza Augusto Imperatore, the hotel blends the timeless elegance of Imperial Rome with contemporary design and premium materials. Francesca Romana Fivoli and Carlo Bevilacqua emphasized the key principles guiding Bulgari’s commitment to excellence.

They highlighted the importance of craftsmanship that merges tradition and innovation, creating unique and high-quality experiences. The concept of rarity was also underlined, with Bulgari offering exclusive experiences that reflect individuality and authentic luxury. Carlo Bevilacqua specifically discussed the brand’s commitment to sustainability, tackling environmental challenges and seeking eco-friendly solutions without compromising elegance. Lastly, they stressed the value of exceptional service, focused on privacy and personalized attention for each client, ensuring every guest feels special and appreciated.

As Carlo Bevilacqua pointed out, Bulgari’s philosophy in the hospitality sector prioritizes:

Quality over Quantity

The group’s hotels are designed with a limited number of rooms to provide an intimate and sophisticated environment. The goal is to offer every guest an exclusive experience, where hospitality becomes a moment of personalized luxury.

Responsible Luxury: Bulgari Hotels’ Commitment to CSR

During the company meeting, it was explored how Bulgari Hotels & Resorts integrates corporate social responsibility (CSR) into its operations through initiatives that combine environmental sustainability, community support, and cultural promotion.

A significant example is the collaboration with Save the Children, extended to the hospitality sector, to fund educational programs and improve the quality of life for disadvantaged children.

Additionally, the company has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental impact and, over the past year, has become 98% plastic-free, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability. This achievement marks a milestone in the brand’s environmental responsibility strategy, aiming to reduce the use of non-biodegradable materials and promote eco-friendly practices across all its properties.

Lessons of Luxury: Values and Skills

During the company meeting with experts from Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, students received valuable advice and inspiration on how to pursue a career in luxury hospitality. Francesca Romana Fivoli, HR Manager, emphasized the importance of values such as passion, a desire for growth, and a positive attitude.

Bulgari Hotels places special emphasis on soft skills, such as the ability to collaborate in a multicultural and dynamic environment, and values a shared culture that allows different generations to work together. Key competencies required include constructive feedback, a willingness to learn, and alignment with company values.

Carlo Bevilacqua, Hotel Manager, shared a unique perspective on the importance of “common sense” and patience, highlighting the value of personalization in creating memorable experiences for guests, such as yoga courses or cooking lessons that strengthen the emotional connection between guests and the property. He also emphasized the importance of attention to detail, essential for enhancing the luxury experience.
